Westfal Larsen  & Co.    BERGEN / Built in Copenhagen 1926.
Captain Elling J. Andresen. In Convoy HX 77 when torpedoed in the engine room port side by U-48 (Bleichrodt) on October 11-1940, position 57 02N 17 42W. She was on a voyage from San Pedro to Liverpool with 8000 tons general cargo (lumber and metals). The lifeboats on the port side were blown away, the starboard motorboat was crushed against the side of the ship while being lowered and the 5 who were in it fell in the water (1 was later picked up by the 1st mate's boat). Captain Andresen and Carpenter Sigurd Svendsen drifted clear on a raft as Brandanger sank 20 minutes later. They were picked up the next morning by the corvette Clarkia, as were the 14 in the 2nd mate's boat, while 8 others in the 1st mate's boat were found on the afternoon of the 16th by S/S Clan MacDonald and landed in Liverpool 3 days later - 6 had died.

M/S FERNLANE

Fearnley & Eger, Oslo / Built in Copenhagen, Denmark 1927.
Captain Henrik A. Irgens. Torpedoed by the Italian submarine Enrico Tazzoli (Cossato), position 10 02N 20 17W on May 7-1941. She had departed Gourock for Freetown in convoy on April 17, with a cargo of 1585 tons salt, 103 tons iron constructions, 8 gliders and 26 loaded trucks from Manchester, left the convoy on April 23 at 20 ° W and continued south alone. The first torpedo hit in the afterpart of the ship, setting the engine room on fire, but the engineers were able to get to the boat deck, and stopped the engine from there. 4 lifeboats were launched, 3 of which were ordered to leave, while the radio aereal, which had fallen down was rigged up again and a distress call sent out, but when a second torpedo was observed on the port side the captain's boat also set off (from starboard) before the torpedo detonated in the engine room, causing Fernlane to take on a list and start to sink. The sub surfaced and sent off a third torpedo which hit amidships on the starboard side. She listed heavily to starboard, broke amidships and sank quickly by the bow. The crew of 32 (+3 passengers and a dog?) survived. The motor boat took the other boats in tow and headed for Bissagos Islands. When the petrol was used up the boats set sail and landed at Carabella Island on the morning of May 11, where they were fed and given petrol for the motor lifeboat, before continuing to Bissau arriving in the evening of May 13. The cruiser Dorsetshire had caught the radio signals but was not in a position to be able to assist. (The majority of this info is from "Nortraships flåte", J. R. Hegland).

M/T DALFONN
Sigvald Bergesn, Stavanger  / Built in Gothenburg, Sweden 1928.
24. November 1943 - 02. July 1945

In Convoy OB 259 in Dec.-1940, 35 ships. May very well have saved the Dutch tanker Pendrecht from being shelled and sunk by U-96, which according to "Nortraships flåte" had just attacked the Dutch vessel with her last torpedo when Dalfonn appeared on the scene (Dec. 18) having herself previously lost the convoy in bad weather. When Dalfonn's people spotted the U-boat, which until then had been hidden by the tanker they suspected the stricken vessel to be a decoy, possibly a supply ship, and quickly removed themselves, while at the same time sending out radio signals of the situation and firing the guns. 7 shots were fired, but none hit. A few miles away they now observed a British cargo ship which also had spotted the U-boat and which fired at it, whereupon the boat disappeared. The Dutch seamen were then able to take their ship to port. (Pendrecht was torpedoed and sunk by U-48 on June 8 the following year).
In Aug.-1944 Dalfonn was in the large Convoy HX 303 which departed New York on Aug.11 with 104 ships, arrived Liverpool on Aug. 27. 16 other Norwegian ships were also in this convoy, namely Tanafjord, Romulus, Noravind, Atlantic, Sommerstad, Skotaas, Geisha, Thorhild, Petter, Stirlingville, Rena, Para, Titanian, Mui Hock, Fjordaas and Norse Lady,

Sold in 1950 to Thomas Entz Tanker GmbH, Germany, and renamed Elizabeth Entz. Sold to Japanese breakers in 1960 and sailed from Tokuyama on Sept. 16-1960 for Hirao to be broken up.
